A fun little book that gets a little tedious as it progresses.This is a clever story that starts with Nicholas as a child, and follows him through his growth as an Abbott and then a Bishop, and later to Saint Nicholas, and eventually to Santa Claus, spanning centuries. The story is really about Nicholas discovering that he never ages, and can travel faster then normal men, and slowly building a team of helpers and toy factories to deliver to children all over the world.
Mr. Guinn combines a real, and often illuminating, history of the Christmas celebration and traditions with the whimsical team-building story that eventually includes members such as DiVinci and Attila the Hun.
I found the discussions of how December 25th became the date to celebrate Christmas as particularly interesting, and that alone was worth reading this book.
The writing is at times simplistic, and the tales of new members of Santa's team are often corny, but it is all a little tongue-in-cheek and I was willing to ride along. Not classic literature, but a nice diversion during the holidays.
